A brief overview of Rons WebLynx

Rons WebLynx is a tool designed to streamline the world of web research, stripping away the inane and often distracting advertisements and irrelevant articles, leaving you with the exact data you set out to find. Using this tool, your web searches suddenly become proactive, focused, and efficient.

Rons WebLynx Main Window

To top this off, Rons WebLynx not only optimizes your web research but can be used as a remarkable organization tool used to store, edit, and refine your bookmarks for optimum systematization and, to be perfectly blunt, ease.

Where menial tasks such as looking for vacation locations, researching products or searching for specific recipes can be sometimes a reasonably painful ordeal, one would be pleasantly relieved, when using WebLynx, to find that this software does all the work. Once you have uploaded the links that you want to look through, apply the necessary settings, the software pigeonholes the details you wanted to look for, therefore highlighting all the (for lack of a better word) drivel that you want to ignore.

One of the features that makes Rons Weblynx so unique is the ability to share bookmark files with others and synchronize them. For example, parents can create a file with a selection of links adapted to their kids and share the file with them. Then, as the parents make changes to the Kid's file on their own computer, they can systematically update the same file on their kid's computer by synchronizing. The file can be set as read-only. Sharing bookmark files can be very useful within any team, wherever the location of the members, as the file is shared using an e-mail address.

How to Create a New File

Rons WebLynx is file-based allowing you to separate different areas of interest into separate files and have more than one file open at the same time for flexible usage. Creating a new WebLynx file is very easy, and is a great way of storing your links for future uses. Files are saved onto your drive much like a document, so can be accessed both within WebLynx and your File Explorer.

The Dashboard welcomes you with a section dedicated to creating new files, another one to opening existing files and one which handily displays the most recent files.

Also, make sure to notice the little box down the right side of the screen which is called Automatically Open Last File on Start: when this box is checked, as stated by the name, the last Rons WebLynx file will always be the one opening first instead of the dashboard. If you choose this option and want to change it back to land again on the dashboard when opening Rons WebLynx, you will need to go to File/Options/General Settings to remove the tick from "Automatically open last file on start".

On the start page there are a few options available. The first option is the One-Click Start one (see Rons WebLynx - Flash Start (One-Click Start)), meant for first-time users, in order to get started as quickly as possible. Choosing this option means that a file is immediately created and saved in "My Documents", browser bookmarks are automatically imported in Rons WebLynx and a few example folders are also created.

Standard options available: New…, New from Import... and New from Exchange File.... These are explained below.

Note that the ribbon bar File menu also has options to open and create (New) files.

Rons WebLynx Dashboard

New…

New empty File

This option allows you to create a brand-new empty file. You are prompted for your new WebLynx file name and location and when done, your new Rons WebLynx file opens. Thats it, you are now ready to create folders and tags and add links.

New from Import…

New File with Imported Links

This option allows you to create a new file and import links from other sources. When the Import window opens you are prompted for a name and location for your new WebLynx file and you can select from several sources including web browser bookmarks.

See Rons WebLynx - Importing and Exporting Bookmarks for more details.

New from Exchange file…

New File with Exchange Links

This option allows you to create a new file from a WebLynx exchange file. Exchange files are files that contain lists of links. They can be used to backup, email, and generally move links between WebLynx files. When the Import window opens you are prompted for a name and location for your new WebLynx file and one or more WebLynx exchange files.

See Rons WebLynx - Importing and Exporting Bookmarks for more details.

How to Bring Links into Rons WebLynx

Copy and paste links into the application

There are different ways to import links into Rons WebLynx. An easy way to import links for your research is simply to copy and paste links into the application. Just throw them in! For example, you could go to your internet browser and, as usual, type into the search bar what you would like to research. Once the links have loaded, highlight and copy them, as follows:

Capture Browser Search

Do not hesitate to select everything. Rons WebLynx will only keep links.

Once you have done this, open up WebLynx, go to the Folders section on the left panel or to any tag, then right-click on the blank area in the center and select paste. Dragging and dropping works equally well. This will paste all the highlighted links into WebLynx.

Imported Links

When a new link is added, its logo will appear in front of it (when available) and when the link is healthy the block surrounding the logo is green. The colour will get lighter and fade to transparent with the days passing by. It makes it easy to distinguish the newest links among others. When a link is invalid, broken or expired the colour is red.

Another way to check the validity of the links is to select the icon Views in the left-hand panel; within this there is a list of locations in which files can be stored. If there are any ‘broken’ or ‘corrupted’ links they will appear in the sub-folders Missing or Errored, as shown below:

WebLynx Errored or Expired Links

But let's get back to importing links and to the Quick Add.

Type the links in the application using Quick Add

As you know by now, links can be imported directly into any folders but sometimes it can be very useful to just type in a link or paste a link from another application. The Quick Add is an area at the bottom of the screen where links can be typed in directly. To open Quick Add simply click on the Quick Add button on the Ribbon bar at the top of the main window. See picture below.

Rons WebLynx Quick Add Window

As you type your link into the Link box it will be checked, and you can see the status next the box, as well as the icon and Name that have been fetched from the page entered.

Rons WebLynx Quick Add

Clicking Add (+) will add the link to the current folder or tag(s) selected.

Import links Using the Rons WebLynx Wizard

You can also import your saved bookmarks from web browsers, from directories, from files saved in your computer, and even from your e-mails in Outlook. The Import wizard will help you import and sort them properly in Rons WebLynx.

If you select Management/ Import from the Ribbon bar in the main window you will see the first window and Wizard step allowing you to start the import for the different options.

Importing Links with the Wizard

Please read article Rons WebLynx - Importing and Exporting Bookmarks for detailed guidance. It is easy to follow the few steps however which will allow you to locate a folder, or tag(s) or create one to import your links to.

Incidentally a new file can be created from Import when selecting “File” as source and entering a new file name when browsing.

Import whole Websites

Sometimes you just love a website so much that you simply want all its links, from all its pages... or you're simply running a market research! Or you want to know everything about a place or a city that you are about to visit.

You can import the whole website with its internal links as well as external ones if you wish to, by selecting Management/Import Website from the ribbon bar.

Let's imagine that you are planning to visit a city, in this case let's say Troyes, a french city. Before going there you decided to download the tourism information website of Troyes. You downloaded thousands of links, some of them useless, but, because they are very conveniently imported into organized folders (which completely depends on the website designer), it is generally very easy to get rid of what is not relevant or interesting. For example, the majority of the links can be removed by deleting the Dutch, German and Spanish translations. You are left with the core of the most important information you were looking for: links of the best restaurants, shopping areas, historical sites and the city stories. Not only is it useful before travelling there, it's also very nice to keep such information in case you would like to check it out again, or if you would like to share these links with family members or friends.

Importing Websites

Warning: get ready to find yourself spending much to much time looking into great new web links! Enjoy!

Wrapping Up

We hope that this was enough to get you started with Ron WebLynx, give you some idea of the power there-in, and a taste for organizing knowledge. Its addictive.

Note that there is so much more to Rons WebLynx. For example, check the automatic Link Filing, as it adds an extra dimension to Rons WebLynx. It just feels great to get hundreds of links into the application and get them all automatically sorted, stored in different folders, tagged, useless links and broken links all removed, and all in one go! These filing rules are shareable between files. Make it also easy to send links to Rons WebLynx while browsing: simply download your browser(s) extension (See RonsWebLynx - Browser Integration). And finally, make the most of Rons WebLynx by synchronizing your files with other computers, with your team, with your wife, with your kids, locally or/and externally so that you can share links continuously with them.
