Why Offline Content was Removed from WebLynx - 2026-06-25

Offline content was originally introduced in WebLynx several years ago as a way to store local copies of pages, allowing users to access and read them without an active data connection. At the time, this provided a practical benefit, especially when mobile data was less reliable or less widely available.

However, the landscape has changed significantly. Today, most users have consistent access to mobile data, making offline access far less critical than it once was. In addition, modern web pages have become far more complex in both structure and functionality. This evolution has made it increasingly difficult to capture and reproduce pages accurately for offline use, ultimately reducing the usefulness of the feature.

Given these changes, the offline content capability no longer provides meaningful value and has therefore been removed from WebLynx.

Benefits

Offline content also introduced additional overhead within WebLynx documents, consuming both time and storage space.

By removing offline content, WebLynx benefits from reduced disk usage and a leaner document structure. This change contributes to improved overall performance, including faster startup times and a more efficient user experience.

We don't think the removal of Offline Content, and the associated viewing side panel, will dramatically impact many of our customers, but if some would like it back we would consider adding it as an option to the web browser side panel.
